Mother's Day in Australia was started by Mrs Janet Heyden, a resident of Leichhardt, Sydney in 1924. When visiting a patient at the Newington State Home for Women, she met many lonely and forgotten mothers. Wanting to cheer them up, she obtained support from local businesses and schools to donate and bring gifts to the women. The day has continued to be celebrated on the second Sunday in May each year.

A gorgeous first birthday party was held at Dickson Pool in Canberra. The weather was perfect - not too hot but warm enough to swim.

I thoroughly recommend Dickson Pool for a party. The large established trees offer loads of dappled shade. The BBQ facilities are amazing, and the volleyball court provided lots of fun during swimming breaks.

Latex balloons are made from natural rubber, which is a mixture of organic compounds and water. It is a milky substance that comes from the rubber tree (Hevea Brasiliensis). The latex is a renewable resource that can be sustainably tapped without harming the tree.
