Mother's Day in Australia was started by Mrs Janet Heyden, a resident of Leichhardt, Sydney in 1924. When visiting a patient at the Newington State Home for Women, she met many lonely and forgotten mothers. Wanting to cheer them up, she obtained support from local business and schools to donate and bring gifts to the women. The day has continued to be celebrated on the second Sunday in May each year.
Mother's Day is a day to recognise Mother's for all they do (a lot of which goes unnoticed). Mother's come in many forms such as Stepmothers, Nanas, or a close family friend. Spoil and give thanks to all of them.
Mother's Day is also a day for patrons who work together with media and the general community to raise awareness and funds for non-profit causes.
I would like to offer thanks to Janet Heyden for her kindness towards the women she first reached out to.
